Is TotK Recomp legal?

Short answer: the tool contains no game code, but you must own the game, dump it yourself, and keep the result to yourself. This page is not legal advice.

What the project ships

The release has an installer, a recompiler, compilers and the project’s own runtime, under the MIT License with third-party licenses listed in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md. A release check confirms it contains nothing game-derived. The license grants nothing for Nintendo’s game.

What you provide

Your own legally obtained copy, dumped from your own console, plus that console’s keys. The project will not tell you how to obtain these, and asking for them in issues is not allowed.

What you must not do

Trademarks and affiliation

TotK Recomp describes itself as an independent, non-commercial fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo. This guide is likewise unofficial and unaffiliated.

FAQ

Is TotK Recomp legal?

The project’s own code is MIT-licensed and contains nothing from the game. Whether building and playing a port from your own copy is allowed depends on where you live; this site is not legal advice. Downloading the game or keys from others is copyright infringement in most countries.

Can Nintendo take TotK Recomp down?

Nintendo has acted against Switch emulators and piracy before. The project avoids distributing any Nintendo code or assets, but there is no guarantee the repository stays up.

Can I share my built game folder?

No. The README says the result contains the game and is for your own use only. Do not share it.
